Awards have started trickling in for the Levelland High School El Lobo yearbook and Lobo Lair newspaper staff. They have received honors from two organizations already and await results from one more.
“We’re excited. It’s a good start. Hopefully, we’ll win more and more every year,” Kelly Williamson, adviser, said.
First, they received an honorable mention from Taylor Publishing for how they carried their 2008-2009 yearbook theme throughout the book.
Then, they heard from the Texas Journalism Educator’s Association (TJEA). ’09 graduate Melissa Salas, now a student at SPC, received the only Superior rating given this year for her artwork that made up the end sheet design. Salas and the entire yearbook staff were also awarded an honorable mention for the cover of the yearbook. The newspaper received an honorable mention for their nameplate design.
“The honorable mentions may not sound like high honors, but they are. For example, the honorable mention for yearbook cover design has hundreds of entries and only one school received an excellent and two schools received honorable mentions, us and one other school,” Williamson said.
They also sent entries to the U.I.L. Intercollegiate Press Conference (ILPC), and results will be announced at their convention in March. Levelland will not attend, but we will receive notification of awards by mail if we win any, she said.
“The TJEA and ILPC contests are statewide contests. Any award is an honor since you’re competing against nearly every Texas high school from 1A-to-5A,” she said. “Levelland hasn’t entered these contests for many years.”
U.I.L. Academic contest is coming up soon too, March 25-26. Levelland Journalism has had students place the last three years and advance to regional competition the last two years.
“I want to build an award-winning program. We’ll do it, even if we have to start slowly. We have talented students,” Williamson said.

There will soon be a link on the LISD and the LHS websites to go to our new online sites. We have one where you go to buy yearbooks online using credit cards. You can order your name and icon(s) there too. You can even build your own full page advertisement to go in the yearbook, or make your own four-page supplement that will go inside the yearbook.

We have another where you can purchase prints of photos taken by high school yearbook or newspaper staff members. We also sell buttons, magnets, and keychains with photos there.
