Back to School

Levelland ISD faculty and staff enjoyed a Back to School Breakfast on Monday, August 16. Staff members entered to the sound of 50′s music to celebrate the theme of the LISD Wellness Program, Rockin’ to the Wellness Beat, and Wellness Committee members passed out guitar key rings. Hockley County School Employees Credit Union President Russell Vest presented each staff member with a notepad and pen. School Board members greeted faculty members as they lined up for a delicious breakfast prepared by Sodexo Food Service. A representative from Edwards Risk Management explained benefits that are offered to LISD staff, including free counseling services for employees and their family members. TCTA Representative and Executive Board Member, Cristal Isaacks, and TSTA Representative, Maggie Contreras invited staff to join a teachers’ organization. Throughout the morning, numbers were drawn and LISD staff competed in “Minute to Win It” challenges for prizes including $25 gift cards, Lobo/Loboette t-shirts, and Texas Tech Football tickets donated by Billy and Kathy Smartt of Sweetwater, Texas. The final challenge was a game between campus principals. Principal Rodney Caddell of South Elementary won a breakfast of donuts and juice for his staff provided by American State Bank. The morning concluded with an encouraging message from Superintendent Mark Holcomb. Mr. Holcomb reminded everyone present that “We ARE Levelland ISD and who we are and what we do makes a difference!”

At a recent teacher inservice at ABC the staff met to review the faculty handbook. The teachers were divided into teams of two and instructed to use visuals to illustrate thirty topics. Ten minutes later, the presentations began. All were memorable but one became very personal when Amee Dobson and Angelica Estrada walked into the room as Mrs. Pugh and me. They proceed to mimic our interaction with children using the “Give Me Five” behavior technique.

1. Eyes on speaker
2. Lips closed
3. Ears listening
4. Sit or stand up straight
5. Hands and feet quiet

Our Positive Behavior Support Assemblies always begin with announcing “Give Me Five.” It delights me to watch two-hundred and fifty students quickly respond to all five statements while anxiously awaiting what comes next.

Mrs. Dobson and Mrs. Estrada perfectly captured the verbal exchange that often goes on between Mrs. Pugh and me. As laughter filled the room, I smiled knowing, it was going to be a bright year!

Today was the first day of school, and it went GREAT for the High School.   Sure there was a lot of organized chaos, and wide eyed freshmen, but in the end the hard work of the teachers and staff made it move smoothly.  Thanks to everyone for their hard work, and we wish everyone luck in their endeavors.

Mr. Vasquez was hard at work, and was everywhere at once today… Here we see him fielding phone calls where ever he can get them…

George and Iris Keeling did an amazing job with organzing an event to show our teachers how much the community appreciates them, and what they do for us.  There were great things to eat, good company to chat with, and a beautiful building to do it in.

Surprisingly, George kept it brief, and everyone had a good time.  Thanks to them for everything they do!
