Some of the Panhandle-South Plains’ best and brightest artists were featured in an exhibit in the Abraham Art Gallery on the campus of Wayland Baptist University from Jan. 25 through Feb. 14. A reception and awards presentation was held Saturday, Jan. 25 from 2-6 p.m. in the gallery atrium, located in the lower level of the Mabee Learning Resources Center. The West Texas Regional Scholastic Art Competition draws entries from a 20-county region across the South Plains. Art teachers from junior highs and high schools within the region are allowed to submit 20 pieces each, and those entries are then gathered at Wayland for judging by a panel of three. This year’s competition netted 1,400 entries.

              After judging, 100 pieces are chosen for Gold Key honors, earning a place in the regional exhibit and advancing to the national competition in New York. Another 160 pieces are awarded silver keys and many more receive honorable mention. All those pieces are also exhibited in the show, bringing the gallery exhibit to more than 400 pieces total, running the media gamut from ceramics and painting to textiles and jewelry. Five pieces were chosen to receive the American Vision Awards, all of which advance to national competition and one of which is guaranteed to be included in the national exhibit.  “Every year, we have had students from this region who have won at the national competition, and some have won some of their biggest awards, like the $5,000 scholarship for the portfolio competition,” Keller said. “Students are also able to compete for university scholarships. We’ve gotten several great students from this competition.”

              At the national level, students’ work competes for more honors, including cash prizes and scholarships. Students can also compete in the portfolio category with a number of their works. Winning pieces will be displayed in a prominent Washington, D.C. gallery and the awards are presented at the Kennedy Center.  The regional exhibit was free and open to the public during regular hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Levelland High School art students submitted their artwork for recognition at the West Texas Regional Scholastic Arts Competition in Plainview. The students were also treated to a trip to the Scholastic Arts Awards Exhibition at the Abraham Art Gallery on the Wayland Baptist University campus.  Leo Camacho is the teacher and sponsor for these Art students.  The following students received top honors for their artwork:
