Capitol first grade parents treated the students to a day filled with fun activities due to their awesome behavior all year long. They went to the park to have a picnic, then came back to the school, and did various play stations, and finished the day with a refreshing popcicle.

3rd grade students at Capitol Elementary who showed great character and didn’t receive too many signatures for the 5th six weeks, were rewarded with Carribean Ice. Each child received a snow cone of their choice when Caribbean Ice came to our school.

Taryn Williams placed 2nd in Editorial Writing at the regional U.I.L. meet at Texas Tech University Saturday, April 21. This qualified her for state competition at the University of Texas May 21.

Williams placed 2nd at district and regional competition. She also placed 5th in Headline writing at district and advanced as an alternate to regionals in that event as well.

“I am so proud of Taryn. She joined the newspaper staff in the middle of last year. She quickly learned Journalism style and was soon laying out the school newspaper all by herself. She worked equally hard on this year’s online school newspaper. She advanced to regionals from district last year as well,” U.I.L. Journalism team coach, Kelly Williamson said.

“This year, she really worked hard. She did lots of practice stories, and she really listened to my critiques and studied U.I.L.’s judging information for the practice stories. She is a very responsible young lady with the talent and determination to become whatever she chooses.”

Advancing to state makes Williams eligible for numerous scholarships.  60% of students advancing to state last year who applied for scholarships received at least one.  She plans on going to SPC first.

South Exemplary first graders performed a musical variety show under the direction of South Music teacher Dixie Marcades, called Dinostars! by John Jacobson and Mark Brymer.  The first graders sang, danced, told jokes and performed for judges.

The Levelland Noon Rotary Club recently gifted every second grader at Capitol Elementary with a free book purchace from the Spring Book Fair. All the students gathered with smiles and book in hand to show their appreciation.

South Exemplary second graders studied different versions the old legend Stone Soup.  Students heard many varieties of the story from the Asian version in the library called The Real Story of Stone Soup by Ying Compenstine, to the English version of Stone Soup by Marcia Brown.  Students experienced reading and understanding recipes.  They concluded their study by making their own stone soup.

Levelland ABC pre-K students recently participated in “When I Grow Up” day. This is a morning dedicated to parental/community involvement and career sharing. This year we were proud to have employees from: Levelland Fire Department, Xcel Energy, Community Health Clinic of Lubbock-Dental, American State Bank, College Avenue Animal Clinic, Off the Wall Fabrication-Welding, and Levelland Clinic North . Students participated in seven, ten-minute rotations. These are informative sessions based on the different careers and jobs that each of these parents and/or community members hold. At the conclusion of the rotations, teachers lead a discussion in their classrooms about the careers that were presented and then followed-up by posing the question “What would you like to do when you grow up?” The teachers are laying the foundation for students to one day make a career choice.

Students from Mrs. Kent and Mrs. Read’s class get hands-on with “Carolina” the poodle from College Avenue Animal Clinic.  Amanda Turner, mother of a LABC student, talked to the students about her job at the Animal Clinic and answered questions related to animals and how to be safe around animals that are not your own.

Zeth and Dontavious from Mrs. Coats and Mrs. Bigger’s class enjoyed trying on the heavy equipment that firemen have to carry when doing their job. 

Ashlee VanNess and Melissa Almager, mothers of LABC students, from Amercian State Bank introduce students to money and talk to them about the importance of saving for their future.  The bank then gave each child a pencil and bank activity booklet to take home. 

Miranda Barrera, mother of two LABC students, from Community Health Clinic of Lubbock-Dental, talked to students about her job as a dental hygienist and how to take care of their teeth.

Kyle Dunlap, father of a LABC student, shows students in Mrs. Jeffcoat and Mrs. Gavina’s classes the safety gear he uses when welding.  The students enjoyed looking at the sun through his special helmet and it not hurting their eyes!

Greg McKay, P.A., father of a LABC student, demonstrated to Mrs. Boles, Mrs. Kent and Mrs. Read’s classes how to examine a patient’s ears, throat, pulse and take blood pressure.  He had two high school helpers and they handed out band-aid packs to each child.

Cody Potter, father of a LABC student, and his fellow co-workers from Xcel Energy talked to the students about their jobs as linemen and how to be safe around electric lines.

Third grade students completed the Pacer Test in P.E.   The Pacer is a mutistage fitness test adapted from the 20-meter shuttle run.  The test is progessive in intensity- it is easy at the beginning and gets harder at the end.  These students were able to run from 25 to 55 laps.    Congratulations to these fine runners.
