Mrs. Solis’ second graders learn Indian customs by studying the Three Sisters. Squanto taught the pilgrims the Three Sisters method of planting. Corn is the strong and tall sister, while the bean plant grows up the corn’s stalk, and finally the squash grows on the ground to protect the ground and keep the moisture in. The Three Sisters need each other to make a good crop for the pilgrims to harvest in the fall.
South Exemplary second graders learn about and experience the timeline of cotton during GAB time with Mrs. Isaacks. Students learned why the farmers use purple poison on the seeds in May, how the cotton plants bloom in the summer, how the cotton is harvested in October, and what happens to the cotton at the gin and after.
South Students and Staff enjoy the activities of Drug Free Week: Put a “CAP” on Drugs Day, National Wear Red Day, “TEAM-UP” Against Drugs Day, and Say “BOO” to Drugs Day.
South Exemplary second graders performed the play Creepy Crawlies under the direction of music teacher, Dixie Marcades.
Mrs. Sims’ second grade readers at South Exemplary School had a sleepover at school. They had read the books, Ira Sleeps Over by Bernard Waber, Henry and Mudge and the Big Sleepover by Cynthia Rylant, Arthur’s First Sleepover by Marc Brown, Froggy’s Sleepover by Jonathan London, and more. The students enjoyed wearing their PJs and participating in their own sleepover during school!
South Exemplary third graders “rocked” out to place value in Mrs. Johnson’s math class. They played their guitars when the place value song played their place value.
South Exemplary First Graders learn to read graphs in math by making a Teddy Graham graph themselves. Students enjoyed voting for their favorite flavor too!
South Exemplary Second graders learned about camping while reading the book Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night by Cynthia Rylant. This realistic fiction book takes readers throughout the entire process of going camping. Students also learned “How To Make a S’more” from their reading book. Second grade teachers engaged their students in this delicious activity.
South Exemplary second graders in Mrs. Stephenson’s class studied the story, Exploring Space with an Astronaut by Patricia Murphy and learned about eating space food while orbiting the Earth. Mrs. Stephenson engaged her second grade students in learning about space food by reading a space food recipe and following directions. The South students loved making and tasting the space food in class.
