South Exemplary first graders performed a musical variety show under the direction of South Music teacher Dixie Marcades, called Dinostars! by John Jacobson and Mark Brymer.  The first graders sang, danced, told jokes and performed for judges.

South Exemplary second graders studied different versions the old legend Stone Soup.  Students heard many varieties of the story from the Asian version in the library called The Real Story of Stone Soup by Ying Compenstine, to the English version of Stone Soup by Marcia Brown.  Students experienced reading and understanding recipes.  They concluded their study by making their own stone soup.

To culminate their dental health unit, Mrs. Stephenson’s South second grade students  read George Washington’s Teeth by Deborah Chandra and Madeline Comora.  Then they made his teeth from pink playdough and lima beans.  Fun and yucky!

South Exemplary Second graders in Mrs. Solis’ health class, studied Dental Health during Dental Health Month.  Dr. MacCasland visited their classroom to inform students about scheduling appointments to see a dentist and to remind students the importance of good dental hygiene.  He gave each second grader a new toothbrush to use at home.  The second graders enjoyed reading books and experiencing activities that involved learning about dental health.

Mrs. Stephenson’s and Mrs. Condit’s language arts classes have been studying winter!  They wrote Cool Poetry, using their five senses.  They drew a SnowBuddy, incorporating a glyph.  They culminated their day of activities by writing, “Winter Is….” and drinking hot chocolate, complete with marshmalows.  Yum!

Mrs. Johnson’s third grade science students are studying matter, including solids, liquids and gasses.  They were engaged in several classroom activities where they can learn the differeneces in matter.

South Exemplary students in Mrs. Stephenson’s second grade class decorate Christmas cookies as a special treat during their Christmas celebration.  Everyone enjoyed being artistic and then munching on their creation!

Mrs. Sanderson’s third graders studied penguins during December.  They read fiction and non-fiction books about penguins.  They wrote their own fact book about penguins.  They experienced and wrote a cinquain poem about penguins.  They ended their unit with a black and white day, by wearing black and white and enjoying black and white healthy snacks.

South Exemplary third graders performed Twas the Night Before Christmas by Sally Albright.  Music teacher Dixie Marcades directed.  The program was filled with classic and new Christmas songs sung by third graders wearing their pajamas. 

South Exemplary second graders in Mrs. Isaacks’ GAB time experience the old classic book, Cranberry Christmas by Wende Devlin.  They studied cranberries and followed a recipe to make Cranberry Christmas Spiced-Tea that they all got to take home and share with their family.
