Lila F. – LIS GEAR Journalist
Today we are going to Lubbock because today is the kick-off. It is at Texas Tech University. I love the Red Raiders! Mrs.Carr has chose me and Mayce to write on the NEO’s. Gabbi and Layce are going to take pictures with an awesome camera! O.K,. we are getting off the bus Now we are in the conference room. We just watched a movie. They just told us what our competition was going to be and it looks really hard!! There is this safety zone where the robot can’t pass it until he lifts it up or we lose penalty points.
Now for our next task we have a box of gum-drops and a package of toothpicks, and we have to build something out of it!!!! Also we have to make it the strongest if we want it to survive the ball of fury. The figure has to be strong enough to not get torn down by the baseball. We are going to build the figure. We came up with some pretty good ideas!!! Some people wanted to build a box, then the Texas Tech sign. There are too many ideas so I’m not going to list all of them! Sorry!!! I think we may have a shot at most disorganize. .Now for the moment you all have been waiting for the judging time!
I am very surprised we did not win anything because I think we did very good!!! But one of the judges called out Levelland and we got so excited but it wasn’t our school it was Middle School!!!
Well I guess I better go so bye!!

We started off and on the 3rd turn we messed up but I think we got it now. Here we go again, it didn’t work . Again right before in the right stop. Again working, oh man! Programaning again back at the ”P”. Noop our robot is not built right so working on robot again. Back to the ”P” no. Programing. Back to the ”P” no programing. Also got it again to the ”P” no . YES, YES, WE DID IT ONLY TWO MORE TIMES YEAH! AGAIN YEAH! 3rd TIME YEAH WE DID IT DONE YEAH! See you again next time bye.
Journalist: Breanna G Team Name: BCIJ
Today we made our robot turn and it almost finished because one of my teammates picked it up, but that’s fine we restarted it. We were so close we just needed to go farther and it landed on the tape which is fine so we are going to fix the robot. It touched the tape again and it still needs to get farther. Now we are fixing it again and hopefully we get it this time. The robot is also making noises. That is cool and we are so close. We are also making it to say some things. We have not succeeded, but we are just having trouble with getting off the tape we are always on the tape. We’ll get eventually. We were at the last turn and it landed on the tape. This time we were really close, but we went outside of the parking. We made it! I’m so excited. We are the first ones to make it. We made it three times. We conquered the “P”. So we finally passed and no one has made it once except for us.
Journalist: Josefina P Team Name: Walle-Bots
Today we made our robot try to run the “P” but it didn’t work out. We are still trying but we are getting really really CLOSE!!. Well, I was taking videos and I was done but my blog got deleted so I’m starting again. Right now we are waiting for are robot to work. Like I said, its close. Now we are running the ”P”. I hope we get it .bye.
Journalist: Layce D Team Name: Robo 101
Today the task is to still build the robot and run the taped “P”. But everyone has already built their robot so I guess it’s just to run the “P”. We just tried to run it but it would go to the end of the stick on the ‘P ‘ and then made three complete 180 turns. So the programmers are working on it now. Well actually one of our programmers is working and one from another team is helping him because one of our team’s programmers isn’t here. The team’s engineer is fixing a problem with the robot’s very back wheel. She has to fix it so it will work. I think it might be the cause of the three 180 turns. She now has it nearly done. The programmers went to help her because they can’t program without the robot to test it on. They called over a engineer from another team to help them because he’s really good at figuring out building problems. Hurray!!!! They finshed it! With the help of Grant the one who went to help them figure out the problem!! So we are about to run it on the “P” as soon as they get the chance to. OK, they tried it and it did the same thing but it wiggled and went diagonally left. So the programmers are seeing if the motors are going the same speed and going to figure out why it’s curving. But now I think they’ve got it so now I have to go and video tape it. Be right back! Ok, it didn’t work. AGAIN! It turned 180 degrees again! GRRRR! Oh well, maybe it will work the next time we try. I hear chearing but it wasn’t for our team. Another team’s robot that got through. Well now we tried it out and it still doesn’t work but Mrs. Hale is helping our guest programmer with it because our actual programmer had to leave early and our engineer had to leave early too. Well we tried again and I’m sure you know the results…. Of course, it’s no it didn’t work. But Mrs. Hale is on the case. Hehe
And I better go record! Well it didn’t work but finally we got some good results. We aren’t turning 180 degrees anymore but we still have to shorten and lengthen some of the turns. But we will get it next GEAR. Bye for now!
Journalist: GABBI G Team Name:THE FIVE THUNDER CHICKS TODAY WE BROKE UP THE FIRE DEMONS BECAUSE THE BRICK HAS NOT WORK SO I AM A THUNDER CHICK SO WE ALMOST MADE IT THOUGH THE “P” BUT THE THIRD AND SECOND TURN WE WERE REALLY HAPPY. IT IS JUST THAT RIGHT NOW MY TEAM IS JUST ABOUT TO FINSH THE “P” YES, WE JUST HAVE THE THIRD TURN AND WE CAN MAKE IT WILL BYE

We’re still making our robot. Well not really because we’re done with the robot parts. We’re just programming it. We’re going to go try it. Well it didn’t work this time but I bet it well next time. It did good. So it’s time to go bye. See you later alligator.
Journalist: Layce D Team Name: Robo 101
Today’s task is the same as last week’s task. We build the robot and made a program to run the taped P. Well we have gotten half of that done. We finished our robot but the programmers are still trying to make a program to run the P. The group leader is helping another engineer with their robot. The programmers are of course making the program. The person who helps us with journalism isn’t here. (By the way her name is Mrs. Pendleton.) She is with the 6th graders helping start GEAR at LMS. We are going to compete against them in the big competition. I’m scared and excited at the same time! Now our team leader is messing with the pieces in the kit and making new things for the robot while the robot charges and the programmers work. As soon as I’m done with writing what going on I’ll help her. The programmers are done and are going to test it out to see if it will work. And our team leader is seeing if the robot is charged. And there she goes off to help the other person with their robot. Ok, well, I’d better go and help where help with the robot.
Journalist: Chancey C. Team Name: Megatrons
Today’s tasks are for the programmers to make the robots run and the engineers to build the robots. Most kids are messing with the parts and pieces and the robots. My team the
Megatrons is almost finished. The have their robot built and have put the program into the robot. Right now they are test running it. Let’s hope that next week my team of Ashley L, Caleb M, Grant S, and Chancey C can get their robot working and running.
Journalist: LiLa F Team Name: The Four Thunder Chicks
Today we are still building our robots. Mayce our team leader is not here today so we have to continue without her awwwwww! Sydney is the only person that is building the robot and Leandra is trying her best to make our program! Poor Sydney is all alone having to do it by herself!!! I am typing on the Neo. Mrs. Carr and the whole GEAR team has decided that we will stay till 5:30 instead of 5:00. I forgot to mention Mayce is at a stock show. Several people are not here today. Now I have to go take pictures. BYE! Ok I am back (ha)! There are several things that have been going on lately like ever since I started GEAR. Since the first day we have learned so much about robots and programming and engineering!!!! Some people have already got there robots built! Guess what, we have our robot built. So now Leandra has to program it. Going to help bye!
Journalist: GABBI G Team Name: FIRE DEMONS
TODAY WE ARE TRYING TO FINISH THE ROBOT. RIGHT KNOW ELIZABETH IS MY TEAM LEADER. SHE IS THE ONE WHO IS BUILDING THE ROBOT. JOSE IS THE PROGRAMMER. HE IS HELPING ELIZABETH. QUALIN IS A PROGRAMMER TOO. WELL, I HAVE TO GO TAKE PICS BYE. OK, I AM BACK. WE ARE STILL TRYING TO FINISH THE ROBOT. WELL WE ARE ALMOST DONE. OK, GUESS THIS IS IT. SORRY I GOT TO GO. BYE.

Today’s assignment is to build the robot, make the program for it, and test it on a taped P on the ground to get a hang of it. Right now my team is building the robot. You start off by adding parts to a motor, then you build another motor section and then you connect them together. Now you have the body. Then you will connect the brick (or brain) to the motors. You have to connect the wheels to the motors. The programmers are setting up the program so they can start working. I’m just sitting here writing it all down. Now the programmers are in the program and are working on it. We haven’t succeeded in making the robot move through the P but I sure we are going to get it done!
Journalist: Josefina P Team Name: Walle-Bots
Today we are trying to make the bot go around the P. I wonder if they will make it go around. The engineers are building the robots and the team leaders are measuring the P. The programmers are programming so the robot can walk. Building looks so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so fun I wish I could build with my team but I wanted to be a journalist. I wonder if we are going to work with the camera today. The kit has a little homie guy and wheels and other Lego stuff. My team is still building the bot and my leader is telling them to hurry because she is already done with the programming. I really like cameras and taking pictures. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Good I am so excited because we are going to put our story on the computer. BYE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Journalist: GABBI G Team Name: FIRE DEMONS
TODAY WE ARE TRYING TO MAKE A ROBOT MOVE. OH; REALLY WE ARE MAKING THE ROBOT AND PROGRAMMERING IT. SO RIGHT NOW, I AM TELLING YOU WHAT MY TEAM IS DOING. THEY ARE TRYING TO FIGURE IT OUT. I AM ABOUT TO HELP MY LEADER SO I WILL BE RIGHT BACK.
OK, I’M BACK. SO LET ME TELL YOU. WE TRIED TO BULID THE ROBOT!!!!!!!! LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT WHAT THE PROGRAMMERS ARE DOING. GUESS! THEY ARE PROGRAMMING FOR THE ROBOT TO MOVE THROUGH THE P AND I GET TO HELP! WE GOT THE ROBOT BUILT AND THEY SUCCEEDING IN MOVING THROUGH PART OF THE P.
Journalist: LiLa F Team Name: The Four Thunder Chicks
We have a little obstacle course where we have to make the robot not touch the tape. We have to keep it in the lines while we make go right three times and then we have to make it go straight four times!!!It is really interesting to watch the programmers do their thing and it is also very interesting to watch the engineers build the awesome robots. But I very much like my job of being a journalist!!!!
I’ve got to take pictures! BYE!!!!!
Journalist: Breanna G Team Name: BCIJ
Today we are programming our team’s robot and building the robot so the robot can go through the obstacle course. We are halfway done. Then we can test the robot through the obstacle course. We are also measuring the obstacle course so the robot will not go out of the lines. The robot can not touch the tape. We were having trouble building the robot, but we got some help from Mrs. Hale. Now we have all the pieces so now we can finish the robot.
Journalist: Brooklyn E Team Name: Robot Brains
Our Job: Building the robot and measuring the P. So first of all we start right away making the robot. We’re all working together making the robot, measuring and making the program. We have a name for the robot and it is Jacob but, he is not done yet. We’re done bye see you next time.

I am working on my vocabulary by writing words that I don’t know in a journal. I am wanting to build my vocabulary skills. I am finding words everywhere. They are in books I read, in class, and on papers I do. For every 20 words I write with the definitions, my teacher asks me the definition of each word. If I know them then the teacher gives me some prize. I love doing this and make me feel like I am taking ownership of my learning. by Angelica G.

During the week of October 26, in the LIS Library we are researching spiders, then writing poems about them, then creating spiders from chenille stems. Here are some excerpts from our spider poems:
I am a swiftly beautiful predator, I am a black widow.
I dream that I am flying on my web in the sky.
I hear the fly’s wings’ vibrations.
(by Katie, Kim, Allyssa A. and Cindy)
I feel the silky webs move. I know the cricket is near.
I move swiftly across my web to catch my prey.
(Alyssa T., Erlinda, and Sofia)
I am a desert tarantula.
I see a car fixing to run over me.
I hear a vroom, vroom.
(Paige, Anna, Chancey, and Elle)
I am a black widow.
I see darkness in my future.
I need another husband.
(Brenden, Isaac, Daniel, Ruben)
I dream of Spiderman.
(Ryan T., Martha A., Dominic S. and Carine S.)
WOW! We have some incredible writers at work here! After we finished our writing, it was fun to read books with spiders perched on top of our heads!
