To reinforce the letter “G” Nick Williams brought his guitar to play for the purple team.  He taught the children different parts of the guitar and the students enjoyed singing along with him.

Mrs. Dobson’s Kindergarten class wrote a sentence as a group and sent out e-mails asking LISD employees what their favorite gift was for Christmas.  As each student opened their e-mail he/she categorized the item and constructed a graph from the data they received.  The students enjoyed this project. 

Today Mrs. Dobson’s class did addition and subtraction story problems.  The kids enjoyed demonstrating their problems using animal plates and beans.

The Pre-K classes of Mrs. Hewitt, Mrs. Timmens, Mrs. Alexander and Mrs Tucker ventured into the Levelland community to learn about recycling. The four classes went to the Levelland Recycling Center where they sorted different recyclable items and then to Levelland United Super Market where Jim Mara explained to the students how they recycle boxes, plastic, and several other items.

The real life experience of recycling the materials brought from home seemed to be a real hit with these eager students!

The Purple Kindergarten Team had a chick to hatch in their classroom.  The students were so excited to experience the life cycle of a chick first hand.

Mrs. Dobson’s Class made patterns using items in the classroom.

Each year, staff and students at Levelland Academic Beginnings Center get “counted” toward a new world record! Today, Superintendent, Mark Holcomb, was on hand to start the reading of Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney. Teachers then continued reading the book to the students. There were 532 participants at LABC.
With funds from the fall book fair, Cindy Pope, the librarian, was able to purchase all kindergarten students a copy of the book to take home and enjoy. SPCAA Head Start—as a part of their Reading Connection project—purchased the books for the prekindergarten students to take home as well.

While enrollment is up across Levelland ISD, it is particularly high in Pre-K, where 241 four year olds make up the largest class Levelland Academic Beginnings Center has ever enrolled. An additional delight is that the Pre-K class consists of nine sets of twins. Another set of twins is enrolled in Kindergarten. Donna Pugh, principal at Levelland ABC, is excited to have the large enrollment numbers and is pleased to welcome these twins. “It was interesting that we had several twins enrolling last May while we were reading in the Levelland News Press about four sets of twins who were graduating from Levelland High School,” she said. “Then, as we completed spring enrollment, then rolled into the fall, it was fun to keep count as the twin number grew and grew and grew some more.” As per state law, parents can choose to put students in the same class or to separate them. “The school will always recommend separation–mainly to encourage independence,” said Mrs. Pugh. “Some parents choose for them to be together as they begin school and usually separate for kindergarten. There are pros and cons both ways.”

Of the ten sets of twins enrolled at Levelland ABC, four sets were born in Hockley County, four sets were born in Lubbock County, one set was born in Gaines County, and one set was born in El Paso.

When asked if they could tell the twins apart, Mrs. Pugh answered, “Sage and Gunnar? Yes! Jayden and Taylor? Yes! The rest are still a work in progress. Parents share their distinguishing characteristics–blonder hair, a birthmark between two of their fingers, etc., but if they are not side by side, it is really hard to tell!”

Mrs. Pugh is looking forward to a great year for the twins and for the campus. She also anticipates a great future for these students. “We can’t wait to see the article about their graduation from Levelland High School in 2025!” she said. “Stay tuned!”

 
Last week we were learning about ordinal numbers so we ran races to see who got 1st – 10th place.
