Levelland ABC pre-K students recently participated in “When I Grow Up” day. This is a morning dedicated to parental/community involvement and career sharing. This year we were proud to have employees from: Levelland Fire Department, Xcel Energy, Community Health Clinic of Lubbock-Dental, American State Bank, College Avenue Animal Clinic, Off the Wall Fabrication-Welding, and Levelland Clinic North . Students participated in seven, ten-minute rotations. These are informative sessions based on the different careers and jobs that each of these parents and/or community members hold. At the conclusion of the rotations, teachers lead a discussion in their classrooms about the careers that were presented and then followed-up by posing the question “What would you like to do when you grow up?” The teachers are laying the foundation for students to one day make a career choice.

Students from Mrs. Kent and Mrs. Read’s class get hands-on with “Carolina” the poodle from College Avenue Animal Clinic.  Amanda Turner, mother of a LABC student, talked to the students about her job at the Animal Clinic and answered questions related to animals and how to be safe around animals that are not your own.

Zeth and Dontavious from Mrs. Coats and Mrs. Bigger’s class enjoyed trying on the heavy equipment that firemen have to carry when doing their job. 

Ashlee VanNess and Melissa Almager, mothers of LABC students, from Amercian State Bank introduce students to money and talk to them about the importance of saving for their future.  The bank then gave each child a pencil and bank activity booklet to take home. 

Miranda Barrera, mother of two LABC students, from Community Health Clinic of Lubbock-Dental, talked to students about her job as a dental hygienist and how to take care of their teeth.

Kyle Dunlap, father of a LABC student, shows students in Mrs. Jeffcoat and Mrs. Gavina’s classes the safety gear he uses when welding.  The students enjoyed looking at the sun through his special helmet and it not hurting their eyes!

Greg McKay, P.A., father of a LABC student, demonstrated to Mrs. Boles, Mrs. Kent and Mrs. Read’s classes how to examine a patient’s ears, throat, pulse and take blood pressure.  He had two high school helpers and they handed out band-aid packs to each child.

Cody Potter, father of a LABC student, and his fellow co-workers from Xcel Energy talked to the students about their jobs as linemen and how to be safe around electric lines.

Each year, staff and students at Levelland Academic Beginnings Center get “counted” toward a new world record! Today, Superintendent, Mark Holcomb, was on hand to start the reading of Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney. Teachers then continued reading the book to the students. There were 532 participants at LABC.
With funds from the fall book fair, Cindy Pope, the librarian, was able to purchase all kindergarten students a copy of the book to take home and enjoy. SPCAA Head Start—as a part of their Reading Connection project—purchased the books for the prekindergarten students to take home as well.

The support of loved ones provides the earliest and often most powerful influence on our lives. Grandparents hold a special place in our families, serving as elders, caregivers, and sources of lasting inspiration. On National Grandparents Day, September 11, 2011, we honor the loving presence of these mentors who have contributed immeasurably to the strength of our families.
On Thursday, September 8, 2011, students and staff of Levelland ABC held a special Grandparent’s Breakfast to show our appreciation to our grandparents. Approximately 150 grandparents were on hand to enjoy muffins, juice and coffee.

Students participated in six, ten-minute rotations. These are informative sessions based on the different careers and jobs that each of these parents and/or community members hold. At the conclusion of the rotations, teachers lead a discussion in their classrooms about the careers that were presented and then followed-up by posing the question “What would you like to do when you grow up?” The teachers are laying the foundation for students to one day make a career choice.

Xcel Energy employee, Robbie Hallford, demonstrates the power of electricity on a house touching a downed power line. He was accompanied by Freeman Miller and LABC parent, Oscar Osornio. During this rotation, students learned that being a lineman can be a very dangerous but exciting job. The Xcel employees also stressed the importance of safety around electricity.

Lou Dee’s Floral employee and parent, Arenda Shakespeare, demonstrates how to make a floral arrangement. Students learned the ins and outs of the floral business.

Father (grandpa of LABC student) and daughter (mother of LABC student) team of Officer Glen Burton of the Levelland Sheriff’s Department and Officer Marsha Pruitt of Lubbock Sheriff’s Department explained their duties working for the Sheriff’s Department.

Levelland ISD resource officers along with LABC parent, Andrew Mosteller, explained their responsibilities as police officers. They showed off “Rhino” the drug dog and taught about “Stranger Danger”.

SPC employee and LABC parent, DeEtte Edens, explained her role in the nursing field. Students were treated with gloves, tongue depressors, and band-aids before leaving this rotation.

Students and staff enjoyed the day and had a little fun trying on the gear!

Every month at Levelland Academic Beginnings Center, the parent club,Parents In Action, show their appreciation for our staff. Mothers along with future LABC students fill a cart with goodies and head down the halls to surprise the teachers. Today, the goodies were “Sweet Treats”. Choices consisted of coconut balls, cookies, donuts, etc.. made and/or donated by parents. Haley Potter made flower pens for the staff too!

Wow-thank you to our parents for making the day a little sweeter at Levelland ABC!

On November 17, 2010 Levelland Academic Beginnings Center held their UIL Invitational meet. Kindergarten and first grade students from Levelland Academic Beginnings Center, South Elementary and Ropes Elementary competed in Oral Reading and Storytelling.

The students and staff at Levelland ABC had fun dressing up this week participating in Red Ribbon Week. Several students wore jerseys on Monday-”Team Up Against Drugs”.  This a fun dress up daybut also a neat way to reinforce the use of numbers in the “real world”.

Jumpstart’s Read for the Record©, presented in partnership with Pearson, is a world record breaking campaign that brings children and adults together to read the same book, on the same day, in homes and communities all over the world.

There were 481 participants at LABC.

It’s Homecoming for the Lobos and the students at Levelland ABC are ready!
Friday morning at LABC started off with the high school cheerleaders and Lucky Lobo here to sell tattoos. We had many parent volunteers on hand to make sure that any student needing a tattoo had it on and was ready for the day. Later in the morning, the senior members of the Lobo football team came to read and invite the students to come show their support at the Homecoming game. The players enjoyed visiting the classrooms and they even stopped by to do some running and hopping in P.E.

Celebrated in 2010 on September 12th, Grandparents Day is a national holiday. It’s a day set aside to honor, respect, laud and applaud grandparents. More than 175 grandparents were on hand Thursday morning to celebrate Grandparents Day with their grandchildren that attend Levelland ABC. Everyone was treated to a breakfast of muffins, coffee and juice.
