The rain did not prevent Levelland ABC pre-K students from participating in “When I Grow Up” day. This is a morning dedicated to parental/community involvement and career sharing. This year we were proud to have: Levelland EMT, Levelland Fire Department, Xcel Energy, Renegade Services, Hockley County Animal Warden and Riggs Farm.
Students participated in six, ten-minute rotations. These are informative sessions based on the different careers and jobs that each of these parents and/or community members hold.
At the conclusion of the rotations, teachers lead a discussion in their classrooms about the careers that were presented and then followed-up by posing the question “What would you like to do when you grow up?” The teachers are laying the foundation for students to one day make a career choice.
Never touch a downed wire!
Xcel Energy employee and parent, Oscar Osornio, demonstrates the power of electricity on a hot dog wiener as compared to your finger. During this rotation, students learned that being a lineman can be a very dangerous but exciting job.
I could not fit Moose the dog in this trap
Alonzo Mendoza, LABC parent with the Levelland Police Department showed students one of his traps and described his job responsibilities as Animal Warden.
Protective Gear
Brian Falkenbury with the Levelland Fire Department discussed the life of a fireman and what all safety gear is necessary to stay safe while fighting fires.
This will not hurt you
Brad Duncan and Jeff Pharis of Levelland EMS, explain to students that during an emergency they are the people that help you. They allowed students to be raised up on the stretcher, hooked up to the heart monitor, one student got to try out the oxygen mask and seen here is Jaelynn having her blood pressure taken.
Where do you get your eggs?
Pete and Sandra Riggs, of Riggs Farm, and proud grandparents of a LABC student, brought geese, hens, a rooster, a duck, and guinea fowls. Sandra shared the different types of eggs and the students enjoyed listening to the different sounds that each animal made.
My dad works with explosives!
Anthony LeCroy, proud parent and employee with Renegade Services was on hand to explain to students the ins and outs of wireline services. He showed a video explaining the process-the students enjoyed the explosions the most.
Thank you to all of our volunteers that made this day a success for our students at LABC!
video management, video solution, video streaming
Friday, October 23rd, the students of Levelland ABC got moving to the beat of the LHS Drum Line! Mr. Hernandez shared with the students the different sounds each kind of drum makes and the drummers showed off their talents. He called for volunteers to help demonstrate how strong one has to be just to carry the drums. PreK student, Audrey reached over and took the sticks and put on a show (the future of the Big Dawg Band looks bright!) Students and teachers loved clapping and grooving to the beat! Thank you Drum Line for coming to LABC!
The students on the Purple Team at Levelland ABC experienced apple activities as they rotated to each class.
In Mrs. Dobson’s room the students began with a taste test. The students graphed what they liked to eat with apples. Do you think they liked fruit dip, caramel, or peanut butter with their apples?

After reading and discussing the book “Johnny Appleseed” in Mrs. Smith’s class, the students did an art activity to represent Johnny. They made headbands that looked like they had a sauce pan on their heads. Don’t they look a lot like him???

Mrs. Gore reviewed patterns using apples cut in half. The children used the apples as stamps to make AB patterns. They also discussed the three parts of an apple.

In Mrs. McFerrin’s class the children heard the story “The Little Red House.” With help from Mrs. McFerrin, the students cut an apple in half and discovered the star inside just as the story had told. They completed the lesson with an art project showing the star inside of the apple.

This week in Mrs. Hayne’s pre-K classroom the students have been learning about the letter W. Mrs. Haynes surprised her students this morning by bringing in 2 large watermelons. Before the students got to bite into this healthy snack, they had several different learning experiences.
The students began by describing the outside of the watermelon with words such as: green, yellow stripes, long, and heavy. Mrs. Haynes then cut it open to show the students the “meat”. They described the inside as red, white, black seeds and wet (better know as juicy). Next, a circle was sliced and then sliced in half and in half again. WOW…talk about a great math lesson!
The students then enjoyed this juicy snack. Mrs. Haynes wrapped up the lesson with a good ole fashion seed spitting contest. Can you believe a girl won with 8ft 2 ½ inches! What a wonderful way to learn about the letter W!

At a recent teacher inservice at ABC the staff met to review the faculty handbook. The teachers were divided into teams of two and instructed to use visuals to illustrate thirty topics. Ten minutes later, the presentations began. All were memorable but one became very personal when Amee Dobson and Angelica Estrada walked into the room as Mrs. Pugh and me. They proceed to mimic our interaction with children using the “Give Me Five” behavior technique.
1. Eyes on speaker
2. Lips closed
3. Ears listening
4. Sit or stand up straight
5. Hands and feet quiet
Our Positive Behavior Support Assemblies always begin with announcing “Give Me Five.” It delights me to watch two-hundred and fifty students quickly respond to all five statements while anxiously awaiting what comes next.
Mrs. Dobson and Mrs. Estrada perfectly captured the verbal exchange that often goes on between Mrs. Pugh and me. As laughter filled the room, I smiled knowing, it was going to be a bright year!
