More than 700 students, advisors and chaperones descended on Holland Medical High School and Hardin-Simmons University on Feb. 25 and 26 for the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) Area 4 Leadership Conference.  Students and advisors from Abilene, El Paso, Amarillo, Lubbock, San Angelo, Brownwood, Clyde, Levelland, and several more schools throughout West Texas participated in two days of healthcare competitions and leadership activities on the HSU campus.  Opening ceremonies for the annual event were held Friday, Feb. 25, at 1:30 p.m. at HSU’s Behrens Auditorium. Featured at the opening was entertainment by Revolution from AISD, presentation of colors by Abilene High’s JROTC Color Guard, a welcome by HSU president Lanny Hall, and a keynote address from Abilene mayor Norm Archibald.

Students competed in more than 40 events of healthcare knowledge and skills in an attempt to earn a berth to the HOSA state conference in Corpus Christi. Knowledge contests ranged from biomedical debate to extemporaneous writing and speaking to timed tests in medical terminology and spelling. Participants also engaged in skills competitions in areas such as emergency care, first aid, sports medicine, physical therapy, and dental, veterinary and nursing assisting. Another popular event was HOSA Bowl, a team challenge in medical knowledge designed much like the College Bowl program.

In most events, the top three finishers advance to state. Winners were announced during closing ceremonies Saturday, Feb. 26, at 2 p.m., at Behrens Auditorium.  Ten students from Levelland High School participated in competition.

The following students finished in the top 5 in their skills competition:

Health Education – Cassandra Diaz, Isabel Diaz, Danielle Baker, and Perla Venegas placed 4th.

Other students who placed in the top 10 in their contests were:

Medical Photography – Adrianna Guajardo placed 9th.

CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) – J. Acevedo and Celeste Lopez placed 6th.

According to Jodi Barnes, Levelland High School Health Science Tech teacher and sponsor, our students competed against students from medical school programs which are located on college and university campuses in Abilene, El Paso, and Amarillo.  The Health Science Tech program at Levelland High School will continue to grow and provide students who aspire to work in the medical field with opportunities to advance their education prior to college.  LHS students will be a force to be reckoned with at future competitions.

Some of the Panhandle-South Plains’ best and brightest artists were featured in an exhibit in the Abraham Art Gallery on the campus of Wayland Baptist University from Jan. 25 through Feb. 14. A reception and awards presentation was held Saturday, Jan. 25 from 2-6 p.m. in the gallery atrium, located in the lower level of the Mabee Learning Resources Center. The West Texas Regional Scholastic Art Competition draws entries from a 20-county region across the South Plains. Art teachers from junior highs and high schools within the region are allowed to submit 20 pieces each, and those entries are then gathered at Wayland for judging by a panel of three. This year’s competition netted 1,400 entries.

After judging, 100 pieces are chosen for Gold Key honors, earning a place in the regional exhibit and advancing to the national competition in New York. Another 160 pieces are awarded silver keys and many more receive honorable mention. All those pieces are also exhibited in the show, bringing the gallery exhibit to more than 400 pieces total, running the media gamut from ceramics and painting to textiles and jewelry. Five pieces were chosen to receive the American Vision Awards, all of which advance to national competition and one of which is guaranteed to be included in the national exhibit.  “Every year, we have had students from this region who have won at the national competition, and some have won some of their biggest awards, like the $5,000 scholarship for the portfolio competition,” Keller said. “Students are also able to compete for university scholarships. We’ve gotten several great students from this competition.”

At the national level, students’ work competes for more honors, including cash prizes and scholarships. Students can also compete in the portfolio category with a number of their works. Winning pieces will be displayed in a prominent Washington, D.C. gallery and the awards are presented at the Kennedy Center.  The regional exhibit was free and open to the public during regular hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Levelland High School art students submitted their artwork for recognition at the West Texas Regional Scholastic Arts Competition in Plainview.
