The Levelland High School Theater Department will perform Electra Tuesday May 11 at 7 p.m. Electra is a one-act Greek drama that was the winner of the Division I, 3A U.I.L. One-Act Play Competition. This is the only opportunity for the community to see this winning production.
“Electra is a tragedy in the grandest style of Greek drama,” Tim Trujillo, director, said. “What a talented group of actors, actresses and dancers we have involved in this year’s One-Act play. Electra is one of the more difficult plays we’ve attempted, and it is a real testament to the depth of talent in our theater program that we emerged as District Champions.”
The public is invited to attend the public performance on May 11 at L.H.S.’s theater. Tickets are $3 each and are available at the door.
Electra is a tale of a woman obsessed with defending her father’s honor. Electra, played by junior Brooke Etheridge, has been kept hostage by her mother, Queen Clytemnestra and King Aegisthus.
Clytemnestra, junior Makenzee Spruiell, and Aegisthus, senior Kyle Hysmith, murdered Electra’s father. Chrysothemis, junior Kristen Williamson, is torn between helping her sister or supporting her step mom, the queen.
The cast also includes: Tanner Saunders, Jacob Faulks, Coby Crisp and the Greek chorus made up of Sarah Adams, Caitlyn Bush, Susan Duff, and Mackinze Spears. Ty Hewitt, Zach Myatt, Sam Moody, Levi Norman, and Leah Stuart make up the crew.
At district, Etheridge won Best Actress, Faulks made the all-star cast, and the Greek chorus made honorable mention all-star cast. Hewitt, won a technical award for best stage manager. At regionals, Etheridge made all-star cast, and Williamson and Saunders made honorable mention all-star cast.

Awards have started trickling in for the Levelland High School El Lobo yearbook and Lobo Lair newspaper staff. They have received honors from two organizations already and await results from one more.
“We’re excited. It’s a good start. Hopefully, we’ll win more and more every year,” Kelly Williamson, adviser, said.
First, they received an honorable mention from Taylor Publishing for how they carried their 2008-2009 yearbook theme throughout the book.
Then, they heard from the Texas Journalism Educator’s Association (TJEA). ’09 graduate Melissa Salas, now a student at SPC, received the only Superior rating given this year for her artwork that made up the end sheet design. Salas and the entire yearbook staff were also awarded an honorable mention for the cover of the yearbook. The newspaper received an honorable mention for their nameplate design.
“The honorable mentions may not sound like high honors, but they are. For example, the honorable mention for yearbook cover design has hundreds of entries and only one school received an excellent and two schools received honorable mentions, us and one other school,” Williamson said.
They also sent entries to the U.I.L. Intercollegiate Press Conference (ILPC), and results will be announced at their convention in March. Levelland will not attend, but we will receive notification of awards by mail if we win any, she said.
“The TJEA and ILPC contests are statewide contests. Any award is an honor since you’re competing against nearly every Texas high school from 1A-to-5A,” she said. “Levelland hasn’t entered these contests for many years.”
U.I.L. Academic contest is coming up soon too, March 25-26. Levelland Journalism has had students place the last three years and advance to regional competition the last two years.
“I want to build an award-winning program. We’ll do it, even if we have to start slowly. We have talented students,” Williamson said.

Mr. Camacho picked the best art piece from every student, and entered them into the contest.
The project of mine that was entered was a Flying V guitar made of cardboard, tinfoil, and paint. I enjoyed making this project because music is one of my favorite things, and a guitar represents that.

Gold key winner – Trenton Womack
Silver key winner – Nancy Corona
Honorable mentions: Kyle Caviness, AJ Hernandez, Jonathan Rodriguez, Yolanda Cano, Vivian Nieland, Angela Rodriguez, Dominic Castro.
These students will accept their awards at a ceremony in Plainview, Texas Feb. 6th. Their art work will be exhibited in Plainview at the Learning Resource Center from Jan 25th to Feb 19th.

Someone paid $10 each for Coach Gary Gutierrez and Coach Roy Garcia to show a pig. Without the required $20 to get out of it, they each did it with a smile on their face. The Hockley County Stock Show began Tuesday night with the Chapter competition and continues til Thursday with County competition.
Caoch Garcia won the old person showmanship contest

There will soon be a link on the LISD and the LHS websites to go to our new online sites. We have one where you go to buy yearbooks online using credit cards. You can order your name and icon(s) there too. You can even build your own full page advertisement to go in the yearbook, or make your own four-page supplement that will go inside the yearbook.
We have another where you can purchase prints of photos taken by high school yearbook or newspaper staff members. We also sell buttons, magnets, and keychains with photos there.

Instead of being rushed like cattle to have their photos taken in the school cafeteria or theater, seniors will have the option of having a fun, relaxed photo shoot by an experienced & talented photographer.
Between now and November 10, seniors need to call Prestige Portraits by Lifetouch at (806) 543-5265 to schedule their senior photo shoot. They are located at 8004 Indiana, Suite A16. Choose a yearbook only shoot that is free, or bring other outfits and choose one of their longer photo shoots with a session fee. Seniors will still be photographed in black drapes and tuxedos for the yearbook.
If you choose not to call Prestige Portraits, you will need to take your senior photo on November 11th in the school cafeteria on retake photo day.
